Wolves ‘have enough time’ to stay in the Premier League

New Wolves manager Rob Edwards says his side have enough time to win their fight for Premier League survival this season.

Edwards was relegated from the top flight with Luton in 2023 but believes he has what it takes to avoid the drop this time after leaving Middlesbrough to take charge.

Wolves go into the weekend bottom of the table on just two points – already eight points short of safety.

But Edwards said: “We are not looking at the table right now. I’ll be clear with the players this is what we are going to do and how to win games of football and get points.

“It’s going to come from hard work. Lots of stuff comes underneath that but I will be clear with the lads what that is and my non-negotiables. The players want that.

“We will support them as well and we believe in them. I have told them that. We can’t look too far ahead and where we are with the gap at the moment.

“Every training session, we are living it every single day. There is still enough time. I understand we want to get results quickly as well as that will help with that belief.”

Wolves face Crystal Palace on Saturday looking for a first win of the season.

Only seven teams have been winless in their first 12 Premier League games of a season, though three of those ultimately survived relegation (Everton 1994-95, Derby County 2000-01 and Newcastle United 2021-22).

Edwards says it was tough to leave Middlesbrough having only taken charge in the summer, but the chance to manage the team he supports was too big to turn down.

He said: “”I didn’t know if this opportunity would come up again for me to be the head coach of this club. I didn’t want to look back in 10, 15, 20 years time and see I turned down chance to manage Wolves in the Premier League. That’s it. I didn’t want to regret that and here I am.

“I know the scale of the task and I’m really enthused by it. This week has been really enjoyable. But now the games start so lets see.”
