Tottenham star Pedro Porro reveals reason for club falling into relegation scrap

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro has opened up on the club’s poor campaign, describing their Premier League season as a “disaster” while pointing to injuries as the key reason for them falling into a relegation scrap.

Spurs head into Thursday’s clash against Crystal Palace in alarming form. The North London side have gone 10 matches without a league win and currently sit 16th in the table, only a point above the relegation zone.

A loss to the Eagles would leave them in an even worse situation, with the club set to travel to Anfield in their next outing in the top flight.

Speaking to Spanish media, Porro admitted the situation has been difficult to comprehend.

“Our situation in the Premier League is a disaster and that’s the reality. It’s a tough situation,” he said.

“We are one point clear of the relegation zone and I don’t even know what is happening.”

Tottenham’s struggles have been compounded by a significant injury list, with 10 first-team players currently unavailable.

Porro believes the absences have had a major impact on the team’s ability to compete across multiple competitions.

“You see the group of players that are injured and they could perfectly play in the Premier League games,” he explained. “It’s a starting XI that you look and say to yourself ‘wow!’ … I think that is where the issue is.”

The right-back recently returned from a muscular injury himself, having missed four league matches before featuring again in the recent defeat to Fulham.

Porro also questioned whether the squad was ever deep enough to challenge on several fronts this season. Tottenham were knocked out of the domestic cups earlier in the campaign, losing to Newcastle United in the League Cup and Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

“I believe you have to build a project to compete for everything,” he said. “Obviously, when you don’t have a team to compete in four competitions, it’s difficult.”

Despite their domestic struggles, Spurs have performed far better in Europe. They advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing fourth in the league phase, winning five of their eight matches.

Their reward is a knockout tie against Atletico Madrid, with the first leg approaching. Porro acknowledged the Spanish side will start as favourites.

“Obviously you look at both teams now and Atletico are favourites,” he said. “But then you see how we’ve competed in the Champions League and we’ve hardly conceded goals at home. It will be two very intense games.”

Porro was also asked about speculation linking him with Real Madrid. The 26-year-old, whose current Tottenham contract runs until 2028, insisted he remains focused on improving his own performances.

“When you’re little, you dream about many things,” he said. “I’m focused on my things, my day-to-day, which is the reality. When you think about playing for the best clubs in the world, you have to do many things right for that day to come. I think I still have things to improve and then we will see.”
