Premier League round-up: Everton European charge continues, Leeds pay the penalty aganst Sunderland

Everton continued their push for European football as they cruised to a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Burnley.

Having claimed a dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle United last Saturday, the Toffees enjoyed some rare home comforts at the Hill-Dickinson Stadium, with Burnley offering little resistance in another defeat for a team that looks destined to endure relegation from the Premier League and an immediate return to the Championship.

James Tarkowski’s far-post header against his former club gave Everton the lead in the first half, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made the points safe in the second with a lofted finish over Martin Dubravka after neat build-up play involving Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil.

Eighth-placed Everton are now just two points behind Chelsea in sixth, albeit they have played a game more. Burnley remain eight points adrift of safety.

While Burnley look certainties for the drop, Sunderland can celebrate getting to the 40-point mark after a 1-0 win over another team promoted last season, Leeds United.

Leeds dominated for much of the game and appeared to have taken the lead through Joe Rodon in the 64th minute, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Their frustration was furthered six minutes later when Sunderland broke the deadlock from the penalty spot, Habib Diarra squeaking his spot-kick beyond Karl Darlow after Ethan Ampadu was ruled to have handled the ball in the area.

Leeds still have work to do to be confident of staying in the top flight. They are just six points above the bottom three ahead of third-bottom West Ham’s trip to Fulham on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth drew 0-0 at home to Brentford.

Bournemouth are now also at the 40-point mark, the draw keeping them four points behind Brentford in seventh.
