Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland: Report, result, goals from Premier League
Report, goals and highlights from Newcastle vs Sunderland
Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute strike sent Sunderland above Newcastle in the Premier League with their second Tyne-Wear derby victory of the season in a dramatic end to their first trip to St James’ Park for more than 10 years.
Forward Brobbey was a persistent threat before meeting Enzo Le Fee’s pass from inside the box with a close-range shot against goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, tucking in the rebound to seal the Black Cats’ comeback and put them 11th, a point clear of their arch-rivals.

The Magpies accepted a gift for the 10th-minute opener when home defender Luke O’Nien played a pass straight to Nick Woltemade just outside the box, the ball bouncing off the forward and inside the box to Anthony Gordon, who shifted into space and applied a composed finish.
Chemsdine Talbi pounced to prod in the equaliser 12 minutes after the break, capitalising on Newcastle’s failure to conclusively deal with a corner.

Newcastle vs Sunderland: Mackems make Magpies pay again
Sunderland’s remarkable run against Newcastle in the top flight continued with an eighth win in the sides’ last nine such encounters.
Victory on his first visit to Newcastle means head coach Regis Le Bris has extended Sunderland’s unbeaten league run in the fixture to 11 matches, although the visitors came through a scare when Malick Thiaw headed in 12 minutes from time before being denied by a Video Assistant Referee check.

Sven Botman, who had to be replaced by Thiaw because of a head injury early in the second half, also headed Lewis Hall’s delivery off the crossbar two minutes before half-time.
The result ended a miserable week for Newcastle, who were thrashed 7-2 at Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday and now have one win in five matches in all competitions.

“Ten years since they [last] played at St James’ Park in the Premier League, Newcastle just cannot beat Sunderland,” former England defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.
“What a moment for them. They probably never dreamed, in these last four or five years, that they could beat Newcastle.
“They went up surprisingly through the play-offs last season and to do the double over their biggest rivals is one of the best moments their young fans will remember.”

Analysis: Newcastle goal vs Sunderland ‘on Le Bris’
Carragher criticised Sunderland for the opening goal and said it had been a misjudged part of a plan to supply their forward line with hold-up play from deep.
“This is not just on these players; it’s on the manager,” said Carragher, discussing a move that began with goalkeeper Melker Ellborg playing a short pass to O’Nien.
“It goes back to players thinking, as well – is it on, is it the right thing to do away at Newcastle, early on in the game?
“For me, no. The two players who are involved are a goalkeeper who’s made three starts and Luke O’Nien, who is coming for the second premier league start.
“It’s brilliant from Anthony Gordon, giving Newcastle exactly what they wanted early on in a game like that.”
O’Nien will have been as thrilled as Sunderland’s ecstatic fans to watch Talbi’s equaliser from Xhaka’s corner and Brobbey’s decisive final say.
Both teams are next in action on April 12 (14:00 GMT), when Newcastle travel to Crystal Palace and Sunderland host Tottenham.
