Newcastle: Anthony Gordon makes comparison between Nick Woltemade and Bayern star Harry Kane

Anthony Gordon believes Newcastle United team-mate Nick Woltemade has a similar style of play to his England colleague Harry Kane.

Woltemade arrived on Tyneside in a club-record £69million move in August, his signing and that of Yoane Wissa made to fill the void left by Alexander Isak’s British-record transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.

His signing from Stuttgart was met with criticism from members of the hierarchy at Bayern Munich. Most recently, board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge congratulated Stuttgart on finding an “idiot” to pay what Newcastle did.

But as Wissa has been ruled out until November with a knee injury sustained on international duty and Isak has failed to fire for Liverpool, Woltemade has made a flying start to life at St James’ Park, scoring four goals in seven appearances in all competitions.

His emphatic penalty in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest saw the Germany international join Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer in becoming just the third Newcastle player to score in each of his first three Premier League home games.

Woltemade and Kane want to be quarterbacks

And Gordon believes Woltemade shares playing traits with Bayern and England star Kane, who has already scored 18 goals in all competitions for the defending Bundesliga champions.

“I think they do play a very similar style of football,” Gordon told a press conference ahead of England’s friendly with Wales.

“In terms of they want to almost be like the quarterback, they want to come in and create, they don’t just want to finish the chances like a typical striker would do.

“The amount of assists Harry has got over the past couple of years and over his career is outstanding and, for me personally, I think it helps me because my style suits playing with that style of striker because I can run off them.

“If defenders want to go and engage with them, I can run off the back, so I think it is really positive for me and I really enjoy it.”
