Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

The 44-year-old takes over from Ruben Amorim, whose 14-month reign ended on January 5 after the Portuguese criticised the club’s hierachy.

Ex-Chelsea and England assistant coach Steve Holland will assist Carrick alongside Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion and goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson.

United, who are three points shy of fourth place in seventh, host Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday (12:30 GMT).

Holland was at Chelsea between 2009 and 2017, working under Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Antonio Conte.

Now 55, he was appointed permanently by Southgate in 2017 and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and finals of Euro 2020 and 2024 with the Three Lions, although he lasted only four months as manager of Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos before leaving in April 2025.

Former England centre-back Woodgate worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough and was teammates with United director of football Jason Wilcox at Leeds,

Ex-United defender Evans returns to Old Trafford, with Binnion already at the club as Under-21 lead coach.

In his first managerial role, Carrick succeeded Chris Wilder as Middlesbrough boss in October 2022 and guided his new club from 21st to a final position of fourth in the Championship.

They were beaten 1-0 by Coventry City in the play-offs and finished four points shy of the play-offs the following season despite a run of seven wins and one defeat in their closing 12 games of 2023/24.

Middlesbrough challenged for a play-off place and were fifth with six matches remaining in 2024/25, but five straight defeats between January and February and a run of four points from their final six games meant Boro came 10th, winning 18 and losing 18 of their 46 league fixtures.

Carrick built a reputation for attractive football and had hoped to continue, but many fans were unconvinced and Boro’s board decided to make a change that June, with the head coach, brother Graeme and assistant Woodgate also moving on.

Michael Carrick career

Carrick spent most of his youth career at North Tyneside club Wallsend Boys and joined West Ham in 1997, winning the 1998/99 Youth Cup with the Hammers.

A senior debutant in 1999, he had spells on loan with Swindon Town and Birmingham City before establishing himself in West Ham’s first team in 2000/01.

Alongside teammate Joe Cole, Carrick was beaten to the PFA Young Player of the Year award by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at the end of that campaign, proceeding to suffer relegation the following season and help West Ham finish fourth in the second tier in 2003/04.

Tottenham then paid £2.75 million for Carrick, who played 63 times across two seasons before rejecting a new deal to join United for a fee of up to £18.6m.

He was named in the 2012/13 PFA Team of the Year and was the United Players’ Player of the Year in the same season.

While captaining United in 2017, Carrick experienced an irregular heart rhythm and had a cardiac ablation procedure to correct the issue.

After briefly returning to playing, Carrick then began his coaching career as part of manager Jose Mourinho’s staff.
