Catch up with all the action from Manchester United vs Aston Villa in the Premier League
Manchester United moved closer to Champions League qualification with a convincing win over Aston Villa, Bruno Fernandes once again the architect as Michael Carrick extended his unbeaten home record to five games in charge.
A tight, goalless first half gave little indication of what was to come. United were the more progressive side, creating the better opportunities, but struggled with the final ball.
Dalot squandered the clearest chance of the half, firing over from close range after a brilliantly weighted Fernandes cross-field pass found him in space.
Martinez also produced a fine save to deny Amad’s close-range header, and Fernandes himself curled a strike just wide late in the half.
Rogers was too often isolated, Watkins heavily marshalled by Yoro and Maguire, and Buendia the only one to really threaten, only to be dispossessed by Mainoo just as he was about to pull the trigger.
United found the breakthrough on 53 minutes and it came, as so often this season, from the Fernandes-Casemiro combination. Fernandes delivered a pinpoint corner to the near post and Casemiro, arriving with perfect timing, glanced a header into the far corner.
It was his seventh league goal of the season, five of them assisted by his captain, the most productive partnership in the Premier League this term.
Villa refused to lie down. Emery made a double change on the hour, introducing Tammy Abraham and Leon Bailey, and the visitors levelled on 64 minutes against the run of play.
A corner caused chaos in the United box, with deflections falling kindly to Ross Barkley, who reacted quickest to sweep a composed left-footed finish into the far corner.
Cunha restores order
Within seven minutes of the equaliser, Fernandes spotted Cunha’s run in behind the Villa defence and produced a first-time through ball.
The Brazilian burst clear and slotted past Martinez, his seventh goal of 2026 and yet further evidence of the chemistry he and Fernandes have developed.
The third arrived on 81 minutes through substitute Benjamin Sesko, who has made a habit of impacting games from the bench this season. Cunha drove at the Villa defence down the left and drilled a low cross into the six-yard box, where a Konsa block ricocheted back into danger. Sesko reacted instantly, swivelling sharply and firing through a crowd of bodies into the near corner.
Villa had chances late on to make it uncomfortable. Abraham was denied by a vital Dalot block, and Guehi blazed over from close range in stoppage time, but United saw it out with minimal fuss.
For Carrick, it is now five wins from five home league games since he took charge in January, with United firmly in the top four conversation. Champions League football at Old Trafford next season is beginning to look a very real prospect.
