Newcastle may have reached the EFL Cup semi-finals by beating Fulham at home on Wednesday but they still have some making up to do with their fans following last Sunday’s abject performance at Sunderland.

The Wearsiders were good value for their 1-0 win courtesy of Nick Woltemade’s own goal, with Newcastle offering little in response.

The Magpies will need to do much better if they want to see off a Chelsea side who have won their last two, against Everton at home in the league and third-tier Cardiff City away in the EFL Cup.

Enzo Maresca, whose team are fourth in the table, continues to wear the look of a man largely dissatisfied with life and he will hope for some pre-Christmas cheer in the north-east.
