Chelsea 2-0 Brentford: Premier League report, result, goals as Blues ride their luck to go sixth

Chelsea climbed above Brentford and into sixth in the Premier League as Liam Rosenior oversaw a hard-fought win in his first league game in charge of the Blues.

The Bees missed a collection of fine chances at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez saving brilliantly from Kevin Schade before the break.

Sanchez also made an excellent save to stop Tosin Adarabioyo’s block from going in as an own goal after the defender tried to thwart Mikkel Damsgaard’s effort.

Chelsea cashed in on that save when Joao Pedro lashed in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area with a 26th-minute effort that was ruled onside following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee check.

Mathias Jensen volleyed a wonderful chance against the post from Mikkel Damsgaard’s clever flick, then moments later struck a similar effort into the arms of Sanchez.

Alexander Garnacho provided the miss of the season before half-time when he diverted Pedro Neto’s cross wide from virtually on the goal line.

Chelsea wrapped up the win in the second half after Bees keeper Caoimhín Kelleher tripped Liam Delap.

Cole Palmer stepped up to convert from the spot 14 minutes from time to put his side two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Rosenior was taking charge of his first home league game after a 5-1 win at second-tier Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup third round and a 3-2 defeat at home to Arsenal in their EFL Cup semi-finals first leg.
