Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Amorim lead Manchester tributes for Diogo Jota at Anfield

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, along with players Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, visited Anfield to pay tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva following their tragic deaths earlier this month.

The United trio, all Portuguese, laid flowers outside the Liverpool stadium, joining the many tributes left in memory of Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, who were killed in a car crash on 3 July in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Fernandes and Dalot had been international team-mates of Jota and were part of the Portugal squad that won the Nations League in June, defeating Spain in the final.

The three shared a close bond, not just through football but also as compatriots who had represented their country at the highest level.

A wreath laid by Amorim, Fernandes and Dalot carried a message on behalf of Manchester United that read: “Rest in peace Diogo and Andre. With deepest condolences from everyone at Manchester United.”

Jota had played for Liverpool since 2020, and in a heartfelt gesture, the Merseyside club announced they would retire the No.20 shirt he wore at all levels of the club.

Liverpool returned to the pitch for the first time since Jota’s death on 13 July in a pre-season friendly against Preston at Deepdale.

The match was marked by emotional tributes, including a perfectly observed period of silence and a moving rendition of Jota’s song by fans and players alike.

The presence of figures from Manchester United – Liverpool’s greatest rivals – highlighted the deep respect and shared grief across footballing communities, transcending traditional club loyalties in honour of two lives lost too soon.
