Aston Villa close in on loan deal for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is set to clinch a deadline-day loan move to Aston Villa.

Sancho has been training with the remaining members of the United ‘Bomb Squad’ after being frozen out by Ruben Amorim.

But Fabrizio Romano has reported this morning that the 25-year-old is close to joining Villa on a season-long deal.

Sancho flops at Manchester United

Sancho joined United from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021 for a fee of £73million – becoming the second most-expensive English player in history at the time.

But he has struggled to make much of an impact at Old Trafford. He made 83 appearances but then had a public falling-out with then boss Erik ten Hag which led to him being ostracised from the first-team squad.

He re-joined Dortmund on loan in January 2024 and showed flashes of his previous form at Signal Iduna Park.

Another loan – this time to Chelsea – was agreed at the start of last season but Sancho failed to make a significant impact, leading to the West London club refusing to take up their obligation to make the move permanent – for which they had to pay a £5m fine.

Villa restricted in this window

He gets another chance to relaunch his career at Villa, who are having to box clever in this window due to restrictions around Profit and Sustainability rules.

Unai Emery’s men have made a slow start to the new Premier League season, failing to win any of their opening three games. They have yet to score and lost 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace last night.

In a separate deal, United and Villa are also in talks over Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

United are looking for an experienced keeper with Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana failing to convince.
