Aston Villa continued their strong home form with a 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester United at Villa Park.
The match began at a very open pace, with Villa looking dangerous on the break and United moving the ball confidently through midfield.
The hosts created the first clear opportunities, with John McGinn forcing a smart save from Senne Lammens before Rogers saw a follow-up effort blocked.
United responded through Benjamin Sesko, who was twice played through on goal, but Emiliano Martinez stood up to the challenge, denying the striker on both occasions.
Villa gradually grew into the contest and were rewarded just before half-time. McGinn’s switch of play found Rogers on the left, and the winger cut inside onto his right foot before curling an excellent effort beyond the reach of Lammens to give Villa the lead.
However, that advantage lasted only moments. A lapse in concentration from Matty Cash allowed Patrick Dorgu to win possession deep in Villa territory, and the loose ball fell kindly for Matheus Cunha, who kept his composure to steer a low finish into the corner and send the teams in level at the interval.
Second half
Manchester United were dealt a blow at half-time when Bruno Fernandes was withdrawn with a hamstring issue, forcing Lisandro Martinez into an unfamiliar midfield role.
Despite that setback, United started the second half positively, with Cunha testing Martinez from range and Diogo Dalot forcing a sharp save following a flowing move down the right.
Villa regained control just before the hour mark through another moment of quality from Rogers. After a corner was only partially cleared, the ball fell to the winger on the left edge of the area, and he again bent a precise strike past the goalkeeper to restore the hosts’ lead.
United pushed for a response and came close when Cunha headed wide from close range after an inviting cross from Dorgu. Late pressure followed, with several deliveries into the box and appeals for handball waved away after VAR checks.
Villa, however, remained organised and absorbed the pressure, aided by timely substitutions that helped slow the game in the final stages.
In stoppage time, United earned a free-kick in a promising position, but Mason Mount’s effort landed on the roof of the net, summing up an afternoon of near misses for the visitors.
Villa saw out the remaining moments to secure three points, while United were left frustrated after a performance that contained periods of promise but ultimately lacked a cutting edge at key moments.
