Vinicius is ‘fundamental’ for Real Madrid says Alonso

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says ouut-of-form winger Vinicius Jr remains ‘fundamental’ to his plans at the Bernabeu.

The Brazil forward, 25, has been with Real since 2018 and cemented his place in the club’s history books by scoring in two Champions League final wins.

But this season he has struggled, last scoring for Real in October, and has been linked with a move to the Saudi league.

Alonso said: “There’s still a long season ahead, and Vini is going to be important.

“We need him at his best, enjoying himself on the pitch. When he does, he gives us that spark. We have to find him. He’s fundamental for us.”

Real face city rivals Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Supercopa on Thursday, with the winners duue to face Barcelona or Athletic Club in Sunday’s final.

Alonso is concentrating on a good performance and a step towards winning a trophy in his first season in charge.

He said: “Two things are clear: this is the tournament we’re playing for, so it’s the most important one. Of course, it’s the fourth of the season.

“But it’s the one we have right now, so it’s our absolute priority. We need to play a good match.”
