Zambia 0-0 Comoros: Disappointing Chipolopolo held in Casablanca

Zambia missed the chance to move top of Group A at the Africa Cup of Nations, for a couple of hours at least, after being held to a goalless draw by Comoros.

Having scraped a draw against Mali in their opener, the expectation was they would see off Comoros and move on to four points – and put themselves in a strong position to quality for the knockout stages.

However, they struggled to create much against a resolute Comoros side, who had a goal disallowed in the first half.

Indeed Comoros, beaten 2-0 by tournament hosts Morocco in their opener, carried the greater goal threat in the early stages and only some superb last-ditch defending denied Myziane Maolida from firing home after a corner was not cleared.

Maolida came close again after 15 minutes before Stefano Cusin’s men thought they had gone in front four minutes later. Some nice play from Rafiki Said enabled Maolida to tap home but the effort was chalked off by VAR for an infringement in the build-up.

It took Zambia about 70 minutes to muster much going forward but, even then, it came from crosses into the area that were well dealt with by the Comoros defence.

Faiz Selemani came close with a header at the other end before Lubambo Musonda wasted Zambia’s best chance, lashing high over the bar when well placed with four minutes to go.

Some late Zambia pressure came to nought, meaning they will have to get something against Morocco in their last pool game if they want to advance.
