Spain star Bonmati discharged from hospital days ahead of Euro 2025 kick-off
Aitana Bonmati will head to Switzerland to link up with the Spain squad ahead of Euro 2025 in the coming days.
Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from hospital following treatment for viral meningitis days ahead of the start of Euro 2025.
Bonmati missed Spain’s 3-1 win over Japan on Friday as she was taken to a hospital in Madrid, having sat out training the previous day.
But she is now set to rejoin the Spain squad as they attempt to add the European title to the World Cup they won in 2023, with Bonmati picked as winner of the Golden Ball for the player of the tournament.
A short statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) read: “After several days in hospital with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from hospital and will join the Spanish national team’s training camp in the coming days.”
Bonmati won the Ballon d’Or for the second successive year in 2024, having inspired Barcelona to the treble and helped Spain to Nations League glory.
She scored 12 goals in Liga F this season as Barca retained the Spanish title once again, though they were stunned by Arsenal in the Women’s Champions League final and also failed to defend the Copa de la Reina.
Euro 2025 starts on Wednesday, with Spain’s first game against Portugal taking place in Bern on Thursday.
