Scaloni appreciates ‘good test’ after Argentina pick up routine win against Angola

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni says Angola gave the world champions a tough match in Africa on Friday evening.

The 2022 World Cup winners ended up cruising to a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and the inevitable Lionel Messi.

But Argentina were given plenty of scares throughout the 90 minutes, something the head coach praised their opponents for.

Speaking after the game, Scaloni said: “You always learn when you play a match against rivals you don’t know very well, and who are as physically strong as Angola.”

“It was a good test; they have fast players. I think we rose to the occasion, even though at times we could have done better.”

“We tried to play the game to our strengths, I congratulate our opponents on their good performance as well.”

“Otamendi didn’t play because we preferred to take care of him, we know him. Today we chose other players but we knew he was willing as always.”

“I know this is a town that is happy when things go well for us, we are very grateful for the welcome they gave us.”

Midfielder Rodrigo de Paul echoed his manager’s thoughts, and praised his nation for their strong end to the year, as well as the lovely reception from Angola fans.

He added: “We finished well, it was a good year, with moments of very good football, always with things to improve. The important thing is that we continue competing and we take everything very seriously.

“We were received with great affection here in Angola, so we are very happy. They have a great team.”
