Lewis-Skelly ‘lost for words’ after scoring and being named Player of the Match on England debut

England newbie Myles Lewis-Skelly was left speechless after completing his debut for the Three Lions.

The 18-year-old opened the scoring as Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Albania in their opening World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Friday night.

And it was a trademark finish for Lewis-Skelly, who has been in fine form for Arsenal since breaking through under Mikel Arteta this season.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I am lost for words.

“This past six months have gone so quickly. I stay in the present and I take every moment as it comes.”

“All I remember is staying wide and rotating with Marcus Rashford. Jude loves to stay on the half-turn. It was a great pass from him and the timing was very good.

“The finish, the keeper was coming at me, and I tried to put it between the legs.

“I didn’t even think I was going to score.”

It will have been a feeling of elation when Lewis-Skelly found out he would be starting, let alone netting the opener for Tuchel’s reign.

He added: “I found out in the morning in the meeting and when I saw my name my heart started to pound – I was so excited.

“So many message before the game. They are all here tonight and it means the world to them.

“Honestly, it is incredible – this is a day I’ll never forget.”
