Finalissima: UEFA to make final decision on potential venue switch next week
Lusail Stadium is scheduled to host the game.
UEFA is not currently considering alternative venues for the Finalissima, with a decision on whether to move the game from Qatar set to be made next week amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The Finalissima, which sees European Championship winners Spain take on Copa America champions Argentina, is due to take place on March 26.
Lusail Stadium, which played host to a stunning 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, won on penalties by La Albiceleste after a 3-3 draw, had been selected as the venue for the game.
However, Qatar has been one of several Gulf states targeted by neighbours Iran in response to the continued airstrikes by the United States and Israel, leading to speculation that the Finalissima will be moved.
But in a statement, a UEFA spokesperson suggested talk of a change of venue is, for now, premature.
“We are aware of the speculation surrounding the Finalissima, given the situation in the region,” the statement read.
“Discussions are ongoing with the local organisers who have made a huge effort to make the match a success. A final decision is anticipated towards the end of next week.
“At present, there are no alternative venues being considered. We will not be commenting further until a decision is made.”
