BREAKING NEWS: Manchester City youngster added to England squad

Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly was today added to the England squad for the upcoming doubleheader against Wales and Latvia.

It is a first senior call-up for the 20-year-old, who moves up from the Under-21s, for the friendly with Wales on Thursday and the World Cup qualifier in Riga five days later.

O’Reilly replaces Reece James in the squad after the Chelsea defender sustained an injury in his side’s 2-1 defeat of Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Manchester-born defender has made nine appearances for City in all competitions this season, emerging as Pep Guardiola’s first-choice at left-back, even though it is not his natural position.

He played the full 90 minutes yesterday as City won 1-0 at Brentford to move up to fifth in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Arsenal.

O’Reilly’s importance to City was reflected in him signing a new five-year contract last month.
