WATCH: Ingenious Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick gives Liverpool lift-off against Marseille
Liverpool broke the deadlock at the Stade Velodrome.
An ingenious Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick on the stroke of half-time gave Liverpool the lead going into the break in the Champions League clash against Marseille.
The Hungarian netted in injury time at the end of what was a largely even first period at the Stade Velodrome.
After Ryan Gravenberch was scythed down on the edge of the box, Szoboszlai stepped up and fired a low strike under the jumping Marseille wall to catch out Geronimo Rulli in the hosts’ goal and give Arne Slot’s men the advantage.
Hugo Ekitike had earlier had a goal ruled out for offside after he latched on to Szoboszlai’s driven cross, before the returning Mohamed Salah flicked an effort just over the bar.
A win for Liverpool would boost their chances of securing a top-eight spot and automatic qualification to the next round of the Champions League.
However, Marseille, under former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, are also looking to avoid the play-off round and book safe passage to the knockout phase.
