WATCH: Four goals and missed penalty in first half of Monaco vs PSG before red card early in second half in crazy game
PSG have been forced into a play-off tie to reach the last 16
Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain played out a crazy first half in their Champions League play-off tie which saw the holders go two-goals down early and miss a penalty.
The champions were left shell-shocked when Folarin Balogun nodded Monaco in front, finishing off a lightning counter sparked after Nuno Mendes was dispossessed. Aleksandr Golovin led the charge and teed up the former Arsenal striker, who made no mistake.
Still reeling, PSG responded with intent and began to dominate, carving Monaco open at will. Joao Neves should have hauled them level but blazed a glorious chance over the bar.
Instead, it was Monaco who struck again. Just as PSG tightened the screw, Maghnes Akliouche slipped Balogun through and the striker surged clear before coolly bagging his second of the night.
PSG were handed an instant lifeline when Wout Faes clumsily felled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. But the misery deepened as Vitinha’s tame effort from the spot was superbly kept out by Philipp Kohn, preserving Monaco’s two-goal cushion.
Luis Enrique rolled the dice early, hauling off Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele before the half-hour mark. The bold call paid off instantly, as his replacement Doue rifled home from the left to spark the comeback.
Achraf Hakimi dragged PSG level on the stroke of half-time after Doue’s effort was parried into his path, the Moroccan keeping his composure to finish.
The chaos continued just three minutes into the second half when Monaco were reduced to 10 men, Golovin shown a straight red for a reckless high challenge on Vitinha.
