Eintracht Frankfurt take shock lead against Barcelona in the Champions League
Eintracht Frankfurt took a shock lead in their Champions League clash with Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.
Ansgar Knauff gave the Bundesliga side the advantage in the 21st minute after a rapid counter attack that saw the German striker beat Barcelona’s high defensive line before slotting home.
Frankfurt were the first side in three years to step out at the Camp Nou in Europe’s elite club competition following major construction to the famous ground.
It initially looked set to be a long evening for the visitors, with the hosts largely dominating proceedings in the opening stages.
Hansi Flick’s men thought they had broken the deadlock when the prolific Robert Lewandowski found the net from Raphinha’s cross.
However, the veteran marksman – who trails only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in Champions League goals – was adjudged to have been in an offside position.
The Bundesliga club scored against the run of play shortly after, and defended valiantly for the remainder of the half against the current LaLiga table toppers.
Barca are going in search of a much-needed victory in the Champions League. They are 18th in the standings, and three points off the automatic qualification places for the next stage.
