Werder Bremen appoint Thioune as new coach amid 10-game winless run
The new boss faces a tough start.
Werder Bremen have appointed Daniel Thioune as their new coach.
Thioune takes over from Horst Steffen, who was relieved of his duties following Werder’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend.
That result stretched Werder’s winless run to 10 games, a streak that has left them just a point above Mainz in the Bundesliga’s relegation playoff place.
Thioune has been out of work since being sacked by Fortuna Dusseldorf in October last year. He previously had stints with Osnabruck and Hamburg.
Having suffered play-off heartbreak with Fortuna in 2024 as they lost on penalties to Bochum, Thioune’s appointment at Werder represents his first top-flight job.
“I’m very much looking forward to working with the team and I am convinced that we will succeed in working together effectively and achieving the club’s goals,” Thioune said.
“After the very positive discussions with the management, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to join Werder.”
Managing director Clemens Fritz said: “We had very good talks with Daniel. His idea of football, his manner, and his approach to our current sporting situation were decisive factors in the decision. We are convinced that we turn things around with him.”
It is a tough start for Thioune, with Werder visiting seventh-placed Freiburg on Saturday before taking on champions and league leaders Bayern Munich in his first home game in charge.
