Stade Rennes vs Tottenham Hotspur: Match preview

Stade Rennais vs Tottenham Hotspur betting tips: Europa Conference League preview, predictions and odds

The inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League group stages commence with this headline clash in Northern France.

For the first time since the Cup Winners’ Cup was abolished in 1999, European club football has a third-tier competition.

A key motivation behind the creation of the Europa Conference League is to give clubs from smaller nations the chance to compete in continental competition.

This season, tems from Finland, Armenia, Estonia, Norway, Slovenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and even Gibraltar have made it to the group stages.

But, in this particular clash, it’s two sides from Europe’s top-six ranked leagues who go head-to-head.

Given that their European history is rather modest though, Stade Rennais will surely be targeting a deep run in this new competition.

Les Rouge et Noir have appeared in five Europa League group stages in their history, doing so in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2018 and 2019.

They exited the competition in four of them but, in 2018/19, finished second, beat Real Betis in the round of 32, before losing to Arsenal in the last 16.

12 months ago, having finished third in a curtailed Ligue 1, Rennes made their Champions League debut.

However, it didn’t go to plan as they finished bottom with just one point from fixtures with Chelsea, Sevilla and Krasnodar.

Les Rennais finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season, snatching that spot away from newly-promoted Lens on the final day.

So, Bruno Génésio’s side entered this competition in the play-off round, hammering Norwegian giants Rosenborg.

A 2-0 win at home was followed by a 3-1 victory at Lerkendal Stadion; Nayef Aguerd scoring in both legs.

However, Rennes’ start on the domestic front isn’t much to shout about.

They’ve now lost back-to-back games, both 2-0, at Angers and then at home to Stade de Reims on Sunday.

This leaves them with just five points from five games having only beaten Nantes so far.

Will the start of the Europa Conference League group stages bring reinvigorated performances?

Also in Group G are Dutch side Vitesse and Slovenian PrvaLiga champions NŠ Mura who are competing in their very first group phase.

Rennes are not likely to sail into the knockout stages so will they start with a victory at Roazhon Park?

Will Spurs win in Brittany?

As for Tottenham Hotspur, where on their list of priorities does this competition lie?

When they played their play-off round tie last month, Spurs became the first English club to play in seven different UEFA competitions.

They’ve previously won the UEFA Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup as well as reaching the European Cup semis in 1962 and the Champions League Final of 2019.

The other European competitions they’ve featured in are the UEFA Intertoto Cup and the Europa League, reaching the round of 16 of the latter last season.

Tottenham’s adventure into this new tournament actually started with a first leg defeat at Estádio da Mata Real, going down 1-0.

But, a week later, Harry Kane’s brace and Giovani Lo Celso’s free-kick saw them get through the tie against Paços de Ferreira.

However, how much does Nuno Espírito Santo actually want to be in the Europa Conference League?

If they were to reach the final at Arena Kombëtare in May, Spurs could play up to 17 matches in this competition alone.

The winners secure a place in next season’s Europa League group phase but it would represent Tottenham’s first trophy since the League Cup in 2008.

However, a top four finish in the Premier League and perhaps a run in the FA or Carabao Cups could be higher on the agenda.

It was all going so well for the Lilywhites at the start of this league season in August, winning all three games 1-0 against Man City, Wolves and Watford.

But then, on Saturday, Japhet Tanganga was sent off just before the hour mark and they went on to lose 3-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst.

Will Spurs bounce back with a first ever win in France at the six attempt?

In recent years, some top talent has left Rennes, namely Édouard Mendy, Raphinha, Ismaïla Sarr and many more.

This summer, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was the latest off the conveyor belt, departing for Real Madrid on deadline day.

But, Bruno Génésio does still have a talented squad, all be it with some notable absentees.

Goalkeepers Alfred Gomis and Doğan Alemdar are both currently injured so Romain Salin will keep his place between the sticks.

At centre-back, Jérémy Gelin is also injured so Nayef Aguerd will continue alongside Warmed Omari.

Baptiste Santamaria is attempting to fill Camavinga’s void as the deepest of the three in midfield, with experienced Benjamin Bourigeaud alongside.

In attack, Stade Rennais’ current superstar Jérémy Doku will not feature in this match.

The 19 year old Belgian international misses out due to a hamstring injury but could be back in the not too distant future.

So, Serhou Guirassy will lead the line and provide the main goal threat.

He scored against Arsenal in the Europa League two years ago so will be looking to complete a North London double of sorts.

Will it be a night to remember for Rennes supporters?

As for the visitors, Nuno Espírito Santo named a very inexperienced line-up for the play-off round first leg before a more senior side turned it around in the return game.

So, it’s hard to predict what kind of Spurs XI will take to the field in France.

What doesn’t help Nuno though is a whole-host of absentees for one reason or another.

Summer signing Pierluigi Gollini is firmly the cup keeper and will return here, giving Hugo Lloris is rest.

At centre-back is where they’re extremely short with Davinson Sánchez and Cristian Romero quarantining in Croatia and Eric Dier now injured.

So, Joe Rodon will partner Japhet Tanganga, the latter is suspended for Sunday’s clash against Chelsea after his red card against Crystal Palace.

Ben Davies, who gave away the penalty in that game, and Matt Doherty could be rotated in at full-back in place of Emerson and Sergio Reguilón.

In midfield, club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele hasn’t played a single minute this season but, having been on the bench on Saturday, that could change.

Harry Winks could be alongside with first-choice duo Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg left out.

Giovani Lo Celso is the other player quarantining after his eventful trip to South America.

Further forward, Ryan Sessegnon and new signing Bryan Gil featured in the play-off round so could start once again here.

Dele could keep his place as the number ten but, in attack, Spurs are short of options.

Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn both suffered injuries on international duty and Harry Kane isn’t likely to start here is he?

So, Lucas Moura could lead the line with 17 year old Dane Scarlett on the bench after making his senior debut in the previous round.

Will this mix-and-match Spurs side win in Rennes?
