After an historic cup run last season, can Brentford go one better this time round?

Last season, as a Championship club, the Bees reached the semi-finals of this competition, knocking out four Premier League clubs en route.

Wins over Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Newcastle saw them reach a major cup semi-final for the first time in their history.

There, they were eventually outclassed, going down 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This year, now back in the top-tier themselves after 74 years away, Brentford fans are dreaming of going all the way.

To get this far, they’ve hammered Forest Green Rovers and Oldham Athletic, 3-1 and 7-0, before edging out Stoke City in the fourth round.

Sergi Canós and then Ivan Toney with the goals in the Potteries.

As well as this, Thomas Frank’s side have, largely, adapted to Premier League life well.

Brentford were last in action 12 days ago as their last two fixtures, against Manchester United and Southampton, were postponed.

In that last outing, they came from behind to beat Watford 2-1 on a famous Friday night with Bryan Mbeumo’s 96th minute penalty the winner.

This leaves them 12th, nine points clear of danger, and they’ll be more than happy with that.

Now though, it’s all about keeping their Carabao Cup hopes alive.

When Chelsea visited the Brentford Community Stadium as recently as 16 October, the European Champions left 1-0 winners.

However, the home side dominated, highlighted by the xG scores: Brentford 1.88- 0.28 Chelsea.

This time, will the Bees beat their West London rivals from just 4.9 miles to the east?

Will Chelsea reach the semi-finals?

Chelsea meanwhile, since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003, have become a club built to win trophies.

In the intervening seasons, they’ve won 20 major honours, compared to 15 in the 98 years before the Russians arrival.

This includes the League Cup in 2005, 2007 and 2015, beating Tottenham 2-0 in their most recent final victory.

This season’s Carabao Cup run has seen the Blues win two ties, bringing with them a sense of déjà vu.

Both were at Stamford Bridge and both finished 1-1 before the home side won the subsequent penalty competition 4-3.

First, Aston Villa were ousted before it was Southampton’s turn in round four; Reece James the only man to score in both shootouts.

So now, Chelsea are looking to reach the semi-finals of a domestic cup competition for the seventh time in six seasons.

However, Thomas Tuchel’s team do not come into this encounter in the best shape.

On Sunday, they were held to a goalless draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, with Christian Pulisic unable to convert a late opening.

This actually means the Blues have now only won three of their last eight league games, so find themselves six points behind Manchester City.

In January, they face both sides currently above them, Liverpool on 2 January and Man City 13 days later, in two huge games.

Before then, they want to stay on track for another trophy.

Chelsea could end the season with up to six pieces of silverware, having already lifted the UEFA Super Cup in August.

Will they beat Brentford for the second time in 67 days and reach the last four?

Given that Thomas Frank’s side haven’t been in action for close to a fortnight, his players should be raring to go.

Álvaro Fernández will continue to deputise in goal with David Raya out with a long-term knee injury.

The stand-in Spaniard has kept just two clean sheets in ten appearances for the Bees, coming against Oldham and Everton.

At the back, they’re slightly short of options with Kristoffer Ajer, Ethan Pinnock and Mathias Jørgensen all currently injured.

So, club captain Pontus Jansson will be joined by youngster Charlie Goode and midfielder by trade Vitaly Janelt at the back.

Despite the lack of natural centre-backs, Frank will not deviate away from his 3-5-2 shape.

At wing-back, Sergi Canós was suspended for their last game, having picked up five yellow cards, but will return, displacing Mads Roerslev.

In the middle, Frank Onyeka could start in place of Shandon Baptiste, alongside Mathias Jensen and Christian Nørgaard.

Josh Dasilva, who was sent off in the semi-final last season, is a long-term absentee.

Up front, Ivan Toney has been a key figure for Brentford, scoring 37 goals in just 62 league appearances since joining from Peterborough United.

However, he hasn’t featured since 2 December after testing positive for Covid-19, but his quarantine period is now over.

Toney will come in for Yoane Wissa to partner Bryan Mbeumo in attack.

Marcus Forss, who’s currently the Carabao Cup’s top-scorer with five, is likely to be on the bench.

Will the home crowd roar Brentford on to a famous home win?

As for Thomas Tuchel’s team, due to their ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, he has limited options and will have to ask players to go again.

One area he does have options is in goal, highlighted by the fact two of his six substitutes on Sunday were donning gloves.

So, for this one, Kepa Arrizabalaga could start, as he has done in both previous rounds.

This would see regular number one Édouard Mendy rested; Marcus Bettinelli is still awaiting his debut after joining from Fulham this summer.

In defence, Malang Sarr, who’s sole Premier League appearance came at this venue in October, could start here again.

This would see 37 year old Thiago Silva given a well-earned breather with Antonio Rüdiger and César Azpilicueta completing the back three.

With Ben Chilwell out, possibly for the rest of the season, Marcos Alonso will continue at left-wing-back and Reece James on the other side.

In the middle, Chelsea are so short of options that Saúl Ñíguez is likely to earn just his fifth start for the club, two of which have come in this competition.

Trevoh Chalobah could be alongside, despite being taken off at Molineux.

Jorginho is isolating while Mateo Kovačić and N’Golo Kanté, despite both featuring on Sunday, are only just back from injuries.

In attack, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Romelu Lukaku are four more player affected by the virus outbreak.

So, Ross Barkley could be handed a rare start, completing a front three alongside Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

After picking up a slight knock at the weekend, Hakim Ziyech would make way.

Will this depleted Chelsea side be too strong for Brentford?
