Japan vs El Salvador match preview

Both of these two teams have big tournaments coming up very soon, so preparation is key for both.

Back in November, Japan upset the odds, beating both Germany and Spain en route to the World Cup knockout stages, before eventually being ousted by Croatia on penalties.

Despite this, Hajime Moriyasu’s side then made an underwhelming start to 2023 back in March, drawing a friendly with Uruguay in Tōkyō before defeat to Colombia in Ōsaka four days later.

The Samurai Blue will exclusively play friendlies this calendar year, all aiming towards the next edition of the Asia Cup, kicking off on 12 January in Qatar.

Japan are likely to cruise through the group stages, facing Vietnam, Iraq and Indonesia, and are one of the favourites to go all the way, having won the Asia Cups four times previously, losing to Qatar in the 2019 final.

This month, they’ll also take on Peru in a Kirin Cup friendly this forthcoming Tuesday, hoping this’ll be the first of two wins.

Hugo Pérez’s side are preparing for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, which gets underway in just 11 days ago.

La Selecta well face a prelim winner in their group opener in Fort Lauderdale, probably Martinique or Suriname, before facing Costa Rica in New Jersey and Panama in Houston.

La Azul y Blanco reached the quarter-finals of the most-recent Gold Cup two years ago, but haven’t gone beyond that stage for 34 years; getting out of their group again will be a major achievement.

Given that El Salvador are winless in six, losing each of their last four on the spin, a home win seems more than likely at City of Toyota Stadium.
