Guinea vs Egypt match preview

Group D’s two juggernauts go head-to-head in Marrakesh, both aiming to wrap up qualification.

In the reverse fixture in Cairo 12 months ago, Mostafa Mohamed proved the be the late match-winner as Egypt prevailed 1-0 in Cairo.

However, four days later, the Pharaohs suffered a very rare defeat in AFCON qualifying, surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Ethiopia on the road.

Nevertheless, Rui Vitória’s team got back on track in March by defeating Malawi both home and away, prevailing 2-0 and 4-0, with Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah on target in both.

So, just a point here would see the record five-times winners book their place at January’s Africa Cup of Nations, doing so with a game to spare.

The same can be said of Guinea who, since that matchday one defeat at Cairo International Stadium, have won three on the spin.

Guinea have qualified for seven of the last ten AFCONs, reaching the round of 16 in both 2019 and 2022, and Kaba Diawara’s team are looking like featuring in Côte d’Ivoire next January too.

This fixture is taking place in Morocco, so will there be a winner at the neutral venue that is Grand Stade de Marrakech?
