Ajax vs PSV Eindhoven match preview

For the fifth time, Dutch giants Ajax and PSV Eindhoven go head-to-head in the KNVB Beker Final.

The first three of these were won by Ajax but, 12 months ago, PSV came from a goal down to lift this trophy for the tenth time in Rotterdam.

Who will prevail this time?

A lot has changed in the last year at Ajax, with Erik ten Hag departing for Man United in the summer, before his successor Alfred Schreuder was sacked after just 26 matches at the helm.

Now led by John Heitinga, they’re desperately trying to avoid a first trophyless season for five years.

De Godenzonen are currently third in the Eredivisie, 11 points adrift leaders Feyenoord, and third place isn’t enough for Champions League qualification, which would be a disaster.

Given their opponents’ ongoing struggles, PSV Eindhoven will fancy their chances of retaining their trophy.

Rood-witten ousted Sparta Rotterdam, Emmen and ADO Den Haag and then the surprise package, namely third-tier Spakenburg in the last four, en route to this final.

Just last weekend, PSV smashed Ajax 3-0 in De Topper, Luuk de Jong with a brace, a win that leaves them three points above their rivals, set to sneak into the Champions League at Ajax’s expense.

This is Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first season in charge of the first team, and it could be a roaring success.

Having already beaten Ajax 5-3 in August’s Johan Cruijff Schaal, if PSV retain the KNVB Cup for the first time since 1990, and cling onto second, van Nistelrooy would be delighted with that.

This cup final at De Kuip promises to be an entertaining affair.
