SK Sturm Graz vs Sporting CP match preview

Two sides in the midst of fine respective starts to the campaign are set to lock horns in one of two opening day Europa League Group D fixtures on Thursday, September 21st.

The matchup in question will see Sturm Graz act as hosts, in a meeting with Sporting CP.

Beginning with the former, Sturm Graz currently find themselves sitting pretty in 2nd in the Austrian Bundesliga table.

This comes owing to a record of five wins and two draws from their seven outings to date.

Most recently, this past weekend, Christian Ilzer’s troops battled their way to a credible point, courtesy of a 2-2 stalemate with perennial champions Red Bull Salzburg.

On the continent, meanwhile, Sturm were unfortunate to be paired with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League 3rd round qualifier, with the Europa League likely to provide a more apt test of the club’s abilities.

Sporting, as alluded to above, have also enjoyed a solid go of things over the term’s early weeks, remaining unbeaten across the opening five weeks in the Primeira Liga.

The latest of four victories was forthcoming this past Sunday, in a meeting with Moreirense in Lisbon.

Summer signings Viktor Gyokeres and Morten Hjulmand were both on target in the clash, en route to an eventual 3-0 result.

Such efforts leave Ruben Amorim’s troops sitting joint-top of the Portuguese top-flight, trailing leaders Boavista by way of little more than goal difference.

So, all of this taken into consideration, how do we at 101 envision Thursday’s action unfolding at the Merkur Arena?

Visitors Sporting, based on quality alone, should be viewed as clear favourites. Do not be surprised, though, if Sturm Graz manage to battle their way to a hard-fought share of the spoils.
