Panathinaikos vs Villarreal match preview
One of the more high-profile fixtures of the Europa League group stage’s opening round is set to play out at The Olympic Stadium of Athens on Thursday, September 21st.
The matchup in question will see Panathinaikos act as hosts, in a meeting with Villarreal.
Looking first at the recent endeavours of the former, Panathinaikos will head into proceedings having enjoyed a fine start to the campaign.
In the Super League, the Greek heavyweights have notched three wins from three, notching nine goals along the way whilst conceding none.
This includes, most recently, a 5-0 drubbing of Panetolikos in their return to action this past weekend.
On the continent, meanwhile, Ivan Jovanovic’s troops have impressed, too, first springing a major surprise in sending Marseille packing in a two-legged Champions League qualifying affair.
Though they were ultimately sent packing at the final hurdle by Portuguese outfit Braga, the contenders for this season’s Europa League should, in turn, be wary of the threat posed by a Panathinaikos side ready to spring a further surprise or two.
And first on the list of such clubs comes the aforementioned Villarreal.
La Liga outfit Villarreal will of course be hopeful of a similar European run to that of two years ago, when a showpiece downing of Manchester United culminated in Europa League glory.
The Yellow Submarine, though, will require a quick spike in performances in order to come even close to as much.
This comes with Jose Rojo Martin’s men having struggled over the early weeks of the season.
All told, across five league outings to date, Villarreal have clinched a pair of wins, to go alongside three defeats.
They should be buoyed, though, by a timely return to winning ways this past weekend, when a last-gasp Alexander Sorloth strike gave way to a 2-1 downing of Almeria.
So, all of this taken into consideration, how do we at 101 envision Thursday’s action playing out in Athens?
We feel that Panathinaikos should be considered narrow favourites, but the quality on show in Villarreal’s ranks should prove enough to see the spoils shared between the sides.
