Nice vs Basel match preview

Following last Thursday’s thrilling first leg in Switzerland, it’s all to play for by the French Riviera.

A week ago, Basel struck first thanks to Zeki Amdouni’s penalty, only for Terem Moffi to score twice in seven minutes on the cusp of half time.

The second of Moffi’s brace was an outrageous overhead kick that’s well worth seeking out.

That didn’t prove to be the winner though because, mid-way through the second 45, Amdouni headed home his second of the night; 2-2 it finished at St. Jakob-Park.

For both clubs, this competition is of paramount importance, given that neither are on course to qualify for Europe domestically.

FC Basel are all the way down in sixth in the Swiss Super League, one point below Lugano who occupy the fourth and final European spot.

Thus, Nice came into this tie as favourites, and that remains the case.

Didier Digard made an instant impact after taking over as interim boss in January, unbeaten in 14 matches, including ousting FC Sheriff in the previous round.

However, les Aiglons come into this one having since suffered back-to-back Ligue 1 defeats, beaten by PSG and Brest, so have sunk back down to ninth place.

Victory here though would see Nice reach the semi-finals of a UEFA competition for the first time in their entire history.

Will the Eagles make home advantage count at Allianz Riviera?

Nice team news

Centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo as well as strikers Terem Moffi and Gaëtan Laborde were all rested for Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Stade Brestois.

Moffi and Laborde have scored 19 and 12 goals respectively this season, so both will be a threat once again.

Kasper Schmeichel was part of the Leicester City side that reached the semi-finals of this competition just last season, hoping to go one step further.

Ross Barkley was given a rare start in midfield on Sunday, while Aaron Ramsey could return to the XI here.

Basel team news

Left-back Sergio López is suspended after being booked in the first leg.

With Riccardo Calafiori currently out injured, either 19 year old Hugo Vogel or Canadian winger Liam Millar will fill in there.

Zeki Amdouni, who scored a brace in the first leg, will return to the XI, having also equalised off the bench against top of the table BSC Young Boys at the weekend.

Leading the attack could be Jean-Kévin Augustin and Brighton loanee Andi Zeqiri.
