Gent vs West Ham United match preview

Will West Ham United’s perfect Europa Conference League record continue in East Flanders?

So far, the Hammers have won ten out of ten in this tournament, scoring 25 goals and conceding just five in victories over Viborg, Silkeborg, FCSB, Anderlecht and AEK Larnaca.

In the previous round, they smashed the Cypriot outfit 6-0 on aggregate, with Michail Antonio scoring twice in Larnaca before Jarrod Bowen bagged a brace back at home.

From here though, the difficultly level will increase as the Irons seek to add this trophy to the Cup Winners’ Cup they captured in 1965.

On Saturday, David Moyes’ men climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Fulham.

This leaves the Hammers 14th and, while they’re far from safe yet, they can given this tournament their all.

The two drew in Belgium, but de Buffalo’s then claim a 4-1 victory in Türkiye, with wonderkid Gift Orban bagging a hat-trick in the space 205 seconds, the fastest in the history of UEFA competition.

So, this is the first time Gent have reached the quarter-finals of a continental competition since defeat to Ajax at this stage in the UEFA Cup 31 years ago.

Domestically, Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s team are fourth in the Jupiler Pro League, above Club Brugge on goal difference, desperate to stay there with the play-offs just two games away.

Here, with the second leg to come in East London, West Ham simply be hoping to leave Ghelamco Arena with a positive result.

Gent team news

The aforementioned Gift Orban is Gent’s undisputed star, having scored 14 goals in 12 appearances for the club since arriving from Stabæk in January.

This includes bagging four in one half against Zulte Waregem and that 205 second hat-trick against İstanbul Başakşehir in the last 16.

His usual striker partner Hugo Cuypers is one booking away from suspension, as is defender Jordan Torunarigha.

West Ham United team news

Alphonse Areola has very much been the European goalkeeper this season and last, so will return in place of Łukasz Fabiański.

David Moyes made five changes for Saturday’s win over Fulham after his team were slaughtered by Newcastle last mid-week.

Star midfielder Lucas PaquetĂĄ missed that game due to injury, but is hopeful of returning here.

Five of Gianluca Scamacca’s eight goals for the club have come in the Europa Conference League but, as was the case at Craven Cottage, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio could lead the line.

Angelo Ogbonna is the only player walking the yellow card tightrope.
