Basel vs Nice match preview

Just one French club remains in UEFA competition and that is Nice.

Les Aiglons have reached the quarter-finals of a European competition for the first time since 1960, smashing FC Sheriff Tiraspol 4-1 in the previous round.

Following a scrappy 1-0 victory in Chișinău, Gaëtan Laborde, Terem Moffi and Billal Brahimi were all on target a week later by the French Riviera.

Caretaker manager Didier Digard has really turned Nice’s season around, unbeaten after 14 matches in charge, winning eight of them.

However, this streak was finally ended on Saturday night by PSG, with le Gym losing for the first time since 7 January.

Given that Nice are all the way down in ninth in Ligue 1, they’ll be looking to this competition to save their campaign.

RotBlau have already played 16 Europa Conference League matches to get this far, requiring penalties to oust Å K Slovan Bratislava last month, after both legs ended 2-2.

They found themsleves 2-0 down in Slovakia in the second leg, but Zeki Amdouni snatched a 93rd minute equaliser, before the visitors snuck through in the shootout.

If Basel harbour any hopes of reaching the semis, they’ll surely need to win this first leg at St. Jakob-Park.

Basel team news

Experienced midfielder Taulant Xhaka would miss the second leg suspended if booked here.

This would be a serious blow given that his usual partner Fabian Frei is out injured.

Top-scorer Andi Zeqiri will return to lead the line, with Jean-Kévin Augustin in support.

Nice team news

Former Premier League players Kasper Schmeichel, Aaron Ramsey, Ross Barkley and Nicolas Pépé could all start for the away side.

Gaëtan Laborde will be their main goal threat, having netted 12 times so far this season.
