Palmeiras 1-0 Botafogo: Report, result and goals as extra-time provides dramatic ending

Palmeiras became the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of the expanded Club World Cup with a 1-0 extra-time victory over fellow Brazilians and South American champions Botafogo in Philadelphia.
In a tense and tactical all-Brazilian affair, it was substitute Paulinho who finally broke the deadlock in the 100th minute.
With Botafogo retreating deeper as the game wore on, Paulinho capitalised on space down the right, cut inside, and fired a low, left-footed shot that took a telling deflection off Jair before nestling into the far corner.
It was a moment of individual inspiration in a match largely starved of attacking flair.

Palmeiras were the more proactive side throughout, dominating possession and chances, but were repeatedly denied by the Botafogo defence.
The Rio-based side, who had shown steel in reaching this stage through domestic and continental triumphs, offered little in attack until the final moments.
Drama followed late in extra time as Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gomez was sent off for a second booking after a tangle with Arthur Cabral, leaving his team to survive the final minutes with 10 men.
Botafogo finally found some attacking urgency, with Vitinho missing a golden opportunity from close range and a chaotic goalmouth scramble nearly forcing an equaliser in the dying seconds.
Despite late nerves, the better team progressed and will now face either Chelsea or Benfica in the quarter-finals.
For Botafogo, it’s a painful exit after a proud campaign, but they’ll rue not showing attacking intent earlier.
