Neuer slams PSG goalkeeper Donnarumma for Musiala horror injury at Club World Cup

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer voiced frustration with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma following a serious injury to Jamal Musiala during their Club World Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday.

Musiala, one of Bayern’s brightest stars, sustained what appeared to be a significant injury to his left leg after a contested ball with Donnarumma late in the first half. The challenge left the 22-year-old midfielder in visible pain on the ground.

Though Donnarumma initially won the ball in the 50-50 situation, he stopped in his tracks and dropped to his knees after turning to see the aftermath.

Out of respect, the replay of the incident was not broadcast on the stadium’s big screens at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that Musiala was immediately taken to hospital following the incident.

Neuer criticised the nature of Donnarumma’s challenge and his initial lack of concern for the injured player: “A situation where you don’t have to go in like that,” Neuer told Sky Germany.

“That’s risky. He’s willing to accept the risk of injuring his opponent.

“I went up to him and said, ‘Don’t you want to go over to our player?’ It’s only right to go over and wish the guy well. He did that in the end. Fairness is always important … I would have reacted differently.”

Donnarumma later responded on Instagram with a sombre photo and a heartfelt message directed at Musiala: “All my prayers and well wishes are with you.”

Musiala, who also plays for the German national team, came into the match having scored three goals in the tournament, just one behind joint leaders Angel Di María and Marcos Leonardo in the Golden Boot race.

Despite being reduced to nine men after red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, PSG secured a 2-0 win to reach the semi-finals.
