Club World Cup: Foden ends drought to give Manchester City early lead
Manchester City's Club World Cup opener started with a bang thanks to playmaker Phil Foden.
Phil Foden scored his first goal since January as Manchester City unsurprisingly took the lead in their Club World Cup opener with Wydad Casablanca.
Foden put City ahead in the second minute of the clash at Lincoln Financial Field, steering the ball into the far corner after Savinho’s cross was palmed into the path of the England international by El Mehdi Benabid.
It marked Foden’s first strike since his effort in the Premier League clash with Chelsea on January 25 and the fastest goal of the expanded 32-team competition so far.
City are aiming to retain the Club World Cup having won the final tournament using the old format in 2023 following their Champions League success that may.
Pep Guardiola’s men will also face Al-Ain and Juventus in Group G as they aim to claim a place in the last 16.
