Manchester City vs Club Brugge: Match preview

Manchester City vs Club Brugge betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

After a resounding victory in West Flanders, Manchester City are firmly on track to reach the Champions League round of 16.

A fortnight ago, the Premier League champions blew away their Belgian counterparts, romping to a 5-1 victory at Jan Breydel Stadium.

It took until the half hour mark for the visitors to break the deadlock when João Cancelo got on the end of an outrageous Phil Foden pass.

Riyāḍ Maḥrez made it 2-0 from the penalty spot before Kyle Walker, youngster Cole Palmer and Maḥrez again wrapped up the 5-1 victory.

This win means Pep Guardiola’s side are second in Group A having beaten RB Leipzig 6-3 at home before losing 2-0 in Paris.

To take top spot, they’ll probably have to beat PSG later this month but are very much on course to reach the round of 16 either way.

This is Man City’s 11th successive season in the Champions League group phase, last failing to reach the knockouts in 2012/13.

Will last season’s runners-up take another step towards this season’s last 16?

Overall, i’s not been a very good week for the Citizens.

Last midweek, they crashed out the Carabao Cup, drawing 0-0 with West Ham United before losing on penalties at the London Stadium.

Having won four League Cups in-a-row, that was the first time they’d been eliminated form the competition in five years and one day.

In that time, Donald Trump had been voted into and then out of office, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 237 goals and Watford have changed manager nine times.

They’d been League Cup holders for 1,340, nine days short of Liverpool’s record set between 1981 and 1984.

Then, at the weekend, Man City were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace at home with Aymeric Laporte’s red card at 1-0 the key flashpoint.

That is just the second time in 51 Premier League matches kicking off at three o’clock on a Saturday they’ve lost.

The other defeat coincidentally was also at home to Palace in December 2018.

More importantly, Guardiola’s side remain third in the table but are five points adrift of Chelsea.

Will they bounce back with a Champions League win?

Can Club Brugge cause an upset?

As for Club Brugge, they’d made an excellent start to this Champions League campaign before being battered in the reverse fixture.

Philippe Clement’s side had held PSG to a 1-1 draw at home before a fantastic 2-1 victory in Germany over Leipzig.

Hans Vanaken has scored in all three fixtures in this group, including the consolation a fortnight ago.

With Man City and PSG also in Group A, it was always going to be a big ask to expect Brugge to reach the knockout phase.

But, they’re on course to secure Europa League knockout stage football given that they boast a four-point lead over Leipzig at the half-way mark.

This is the Blue-Black’s fourth successive season in the group stages, finishing third in their group in each of the last three.

That’ll certainly be the aim again but, unlike in the last three seasons, they’ll be hoping to then win a Europa League knockout tie.

Back in the mists of time, Brugge were a real force in Europe, reaching the final of the UEFA Cup in 1976 and the European Cup Final two years later.

In both, they were beaten by Liverpool, the latter a 1-0 defeat at Wembley in which Kenny Dalglish got the only goal.

These days, just competing with Europe’s richest is an achievement.

Domestically, they’ve been very strong in recent seasons, winning four of the last six titles, including last season, finishing no lower than second since 2014.

At the weekend, they beat Sint-Truidense V.V. 2-1 with Bas Dost bagging both goals.

This leaves them second in the Jupiler Pro League, two points behind the shock leaders who are newly-promoted Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Can they now cause a major upset in Manchester?

Pep Guardiola famously isn’t adverse to resting and rotating his XI and, with the Manchester derby coming up on Saturday, don’t be surprised if he does so here.

Ederson though will keep his place in goal.

At the back, Aymeric Laporte’s red card against Crystal Palace means he’ll be suspended at the weekend but can play here.

John Stones has started just two games all season, against Burnley and last midweek’s Carabao Cup tie, so Rúben Dias looks likely to keep his place.

João Cancelo and Kyle Walker, who both scored in Belgium, are first-choice full-backs, meaning Oleksandr Zinchenko could remain on the bench.

In midfield, Kevin De Bruyne might be rested which would see İlkay Gündoğan come in alongside Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

In attack, it could be all change out-wide with Raheem Sterling and Riyāḍ Maḥrez returning in place of Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus.

This would see Phil Foden continue in the false nine role due to the fact Ferran Torres is out injured.

19 year old Cole Palmer will also be hoping to see some minutes after coming off the bench and scoring in the reverse fixture.

Manchester City should blow Brugge away. Again.

Philippe Clement meanwhile is looking to mastermind a memorable win.

Simon Mignolet will continue in goal; he’s now conceded 32 goals in 17 appearances against Man City playing for Sunderland, Liverpool and now Brugge.

Stanley Nsoki was suspended at the weekend but will return alongside Scotland international Jack Hendry, in place of Brandon Mechele.

In midfield though, Colombian international Éder Álvarez Balanta is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

This’ll see Mats Rits start alongside Ruud Vormer and Hans Vanaken.

The latter is looking to maintain his record of having scored in every Champions League game so far this season.

Out-wide, Noa Lang is their outstanding talent, racking up 21 goals and 17 assists in just 55 appearances since arriving from Ajax.

Bas Dost’s brace at the weekend means he’ll lead the line, forcing Charles De Ketelaere to play on the flanks.

José Izquierdo and Wesley are amongst their other attacking options.

Both rejoined the clubs this summer after mixed Premier League spells with Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa respectively.

Will the champions of Belgium cause a huge shock in Manchester?
