Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3: Retirement decision ‘soon’, champion says after completing trilogy win

Katie Taylor has suggested she could fight at Dublin’s 82,000-capacity Croke Park but will consider retirement after beating Amanda Serrano for a third time in the trilogy between the boxing icons.

Hugely popular Taylor retained her six light-welterweight belts in a less eventful third edition of the rivalry with former featherweight titlist Serrano, winning on points in front of more than 20,000 fans at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“I don’t know,” the 39-year-old replied when she was asked whether she had fought for the final time.

“I’m just going to enjoy this victory, sit back and reflect and I’ll make a decision on that soon. It’s a gruelling few months of preparation for these kinds of fights and I’m so glad I was able to showcase what I can do.”

After discovering she had drawn on one scorecard 95-95, Taylor triumped over the 36-year-old Puerto Rican via a 97-93 victory from the other two judges in a result reflecting the balance of the scrap.

“I was definitely surprised to hear the 95-95 scorecard, but it doesn’t matter,” said Taylor. “I was a bit concerned but I was hoping my hand was going to be raised and thank god it was.

“The whole game plan was not letting her feet set. I knew I was capable of a performance like that. I’m so happy I was able to outbox her, and I made the fight a lot easier for myself doing that.

“It was a very smart and clever performance. The previous two fights ended up as complete wars and I came out of the ring battered and bruised.

“I was thinking, ‘why am I just standing there fighting with her?’ I knew I was capable of fighting like that and outboxing her. I’m very, very satisfied right now.

“Maybe [I’ll fight] at Croke Park – that would be unbelievable. These people are spending their hard-earned money to come over and support me and it means the world.”

Taylor vs Serrano: Where were the first two fights?

Taylor first beat Serrano by split decision at Madison Square Garden in April 2022 and did so again by unanimous verdict at the AT&T Stadium in Texas in November 2024.

“We created history three times,” said the Bray-born fighter, who improved her record to 25-1. “It’s amazing to have a rival like that in the sport. Both myself and Amanda are very, very proud.

“I can’t believe this is my life – I’m headlining an all-female card at Madison Square Garden. Looking back at the journey, what an amazing life. These are nights I dreamed of as a kid.”

Katie Taylor vs Chantelle Cameron 3 next?

Taylor’s only defeat is to English former light-welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron, who beat her by mixed decision at Dublin’s 3Arena in May 2023.

Taylor, who gained revenge by the same outcome at the same venue that November, was dismissive when the prospect of another trilogy was put to her.

“I think Chantelle has to see if she can sell out a 1,000-seater arena first,” said Taylor. “I don’t think she can sell out any stadium at all. I made her more money than she really deserves.”

Katie Taylor record

Before she drew huge crowds of Irish fans wherever she fought, Taylor began her professional career in November 2016 and accumulated seven wins on her way to collecting the WBA lightweight belt in October 2017.

A narrow win over Delfine Persoon on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s defeat to Andy Ruiz made Taylor undisputed champion in June 2019.

She became a two-weight world champion by beating Christina Linardatou in November 2019, joining Steve Collins and Carl Frampton as the only Irish boxers to achieve the feat.

A unanimous-decision win over Persoon was one of seven title defenses to follow before the defeat to Cameron, but victory over the same opponent and her latter two wins against Serrano have put Taylor on a run of three wins.

DAZN said her latest fight with Serrano had drawn a pay-per-view audience of more than 1.5 million.
