Will the United States move one step closer to retaining their CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy, or can Panama upset the odds and reach Sunday’s Final?
On Sunday night, the U.S. required a penalty shootout to overcome rivals Canada in their quarter-final clash in Cincinnati.
Brandon Vázquez, at his home stadium, thought he’d snatched the win with an 88th minute header but, in stoppage time, Miles Robinson was penalised for handball, with Canada converting a last-gasp spot-kick.
Then, in extra time, the Canucks took a shock lead that silenced TQL Stadium, but an 114th minute own goal did get USA back on terms, forcing a penalty shootout in Ohio.
Vázquez blazed his effort over the bar, but Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Jesús Ferreira did all manage to convert from 12 yards.
Matt Turner though was the hero of the night, saving Canada’s first two spot-kick meaning, by the time their fifth thwacked the crossbar, it was the U.S. who advanced.
Yoel Bárcenas’ header broke the deadlock before Ismael Díaz bagged a nine minute hat-trick in the second half in Arlington, as los Canaleros swatted aside the Asian champions.
Thomas Christiansen’s team have been generally very impressive at this Gold Cup, topping their group with seven points, most-notably beating fierce rivals Costa Rica 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale.
Now, Panama are on cusp of just their third appearance in a Gold Cup Final, having previously lost out to USA in both 2005 and 2013.
So, who will be celebrating come full time at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, with the winners taking on Mexico or Jamaica in Sunday’s final at SoFi Stadium?
United States team news
B. J. Callaghan isn’t likely to make too many changes to his XI, despite a far from flawless performance on Sunday.
Fit again Miles Robinson will continue at centre-back, with Bryan Reynolds and DeJuan Jones getting the nod over DeAndre Yedlin and John Tolkin at full-back.
Aidan Morris and Alan Soñora have both been forced to withdraw from the squad, so Gianluca Busio will keep his place in midfield alongside James Sands and Đorđe Mihailović.
Out-wide, Cade Cowell is pushing for a start so could come in for Julian Gressel, which would see Alejandro Zendejas switch over to the right.
Jesús Ferreira’ hat-tricks against both St. Kitts & Nevis and then Trinidad & Tobago will see him continue to lead the line, chosen over Brandon Vázquez.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Turner; Reynolds, Robinson, Neal, Jones; Sands, Busio, Mihailović; Gressel, Ferreira, Zendejas.

Panama will be hoping that 24 hours extra preperation time makes all the difference.
Yoel Bárcenas will continue to deputise for Michael Murillo are right-wing-back, with Saturday’s hat-trick hero Ismael Díaz leading the attack.
