Partick Thistle vs Ross County match preview
Just one place in next season’s Scottish Premiership remains up for grabs, with both of these clubs seeking to seize the opportunity.
Ross County are seeking to retain their place in the top division, with this their fourth consecutive Premiership campaign.
Malky Mackay’s men were beaten 3-1 by relegation Kilmarnock on Sunday, a result that secured Killie’s survival, and condemned County to this play-off.
But, Mackay himself reiterated that the Staggies did well to avoid finishing bottom, notable beating Dundee United 3-1 at Tannadice last month, a result that helped save them, intern sending the Tangerines down.
So, with the second leg to come in the Highlands on Sunday, Ross County will simply be seeking some sort of positive result in Glasgow.
This though will prove tough, if Partick Thistle’s recent form is anything to go by.
Since then, Kris Doolan’s team have been on fire, first demolishing Queen’s Park 8-3 on aggregate, winning a seven-goal thriller at home before a thumping 4-0 victory at Ochilview three nights later.
Partick’s semi-final victory over Ayr United was even more emphatic, scoring eight unanswered goals, netting three at home before a 5-0 success at Somerset Park against ten-men last Friday night.
So, Thistle are on the cusp of returning the top division for the first time since 2018, dropping all the way down to League One in the intervening years.
Since the Premiership play-offs were introduced in 2013/14, no club beginning in the quarter-finals have ever won promotion.
As for the final itself, three have been won by the Championship club, with the Premiership outfit retaining their top-flight status on five occasions.
Ahead of a weekend rematch at Victoria Park, will Partick Thistle prevail in this first leg at Firhill?
