Match Preview for Manchester City v West Ham
Manchester City will attempt to make it five Premier League wins in a row when they welcome a struggling West Ham side to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The two sides meet for the first time since January, when Erling Haaland scored twice in a dominant 4-1 home win for the Cityzens.
Since suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Aston Villa at the end of October, Manchester City have gathered significant momentum, winning 10 of their last 12 matches across all competitions and scoring at least twice in all 10 of those victories.
Pep Guardiola’s side continued that run in midweek by defeating Brentford 2-0 to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals, just days after a convincing 3-0 Premier League win away at Crystal Palace.
City now sit second in the table, two points behind leaders Arsenal, and could briefly move top with a win ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Everton.
The Etihad Stadium has once again become a formidable venue for visiting sides. City have won 12 home league games and collected 36 points on home soil since the start of April, more than any other team in that period.
Their only home league defeat in that time came against Tottenham, and they have won seven consecutive matches at the Etihad since.
West Ham also represent a favourable opponent for the champions. City are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League meetings with the Hammers, winning 16 and drawing three, while each of their last five victories in this fixture has seen Guardiola’s side score at least three goals.
West Ham’s struggles have continued under Nuno Espirito Santo, with just two wins from 11 Premier League matches since his appointment.
A five-game winless run has left the Hammers inside the relegation zone heading into the festive period.
Defeat would guarantee West Ham’s place in the bottom three at Christmas, a position they have occupied on four previous occasions in the Premier League era. While they have shown some resilience away from home with three consecutive draws on the road, they have not drawn four straight away league games since the turn of the millennium.
The visitors’ record at the Etihad offers little encouragement. West Ham have lost 15 of their last 16 Premier League away matches against Manchester City, conceding two or more goals in 13 of those defeats.
Team news for Manchester City v West Ham United
Manchester City are dealing with several injury concerns. Oscar Bobb is expected to miss out after sustaining a hamstring issue against Brentford, joining Rodri, Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku and John Stones on the sidelines.
Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri are unavailable due to Africa Cup of Nations commitments, but Guardiola is set to recall several first-choice players, including Erling Haaland, who has scored nine Premier League goals against West Ham.
Rayan Cherki remains a creative force at the Etihad, having registered five assists in his last four home league appearances despite limited minutes.
West Ham are without Lukasz Fabianski due to a back injury, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and El Hadji Malick Diouf are both away at AFCON.
Nuno could revert to a back five, with Kyle Walker-Peters and Oliver Scarles providing width as wing-backs.
Max Kilman may return to the defence alongside Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos, while Jarrod Bowen is expected to lead the line, supported by Lucas Paqueta and Matheus Fernandes.
