Manchester United v Everton preview
When Everton last visited Manchester United less than a year ago, two goals by Marcus Rashford and a comfortable win for the hosts gave little indication of the difficulties Ruben Amorim would have in trying to transform the 20-time English champions’ fortunes.
Feted as a potential saviour, Amorim only won consecutive league matches for the first time last month, adding a third win in that sequence before 2-2 draws at Nottingham Forest and Tottenham tempered some of the excitement around United, who are 10th.
“Great manager, great team,” Amorim said of David Moyes and Everton, using an effusive level of praise that occasionally appears obligatory when Premier League managers speak about opposing teams.
“You need to forget the results. I’ve watched every game Everton [have played] and they lost some games where they deserved so much more, a bit like us.”
Moyes returned to Everton little more than a month after Sean Dyche – now at Nottingham Forest – oversaw that Toffees defeat at Old Trafford last December, and his team are four points from the top six and the relegation zone following a 2-0 home win over Fulham on November 8.
The Scot left Everton to succeed legendary manager Alex Ferguson at United in 2013, lasting fewer than 10 months in post.
“I’m looking forward to going back,” said Moyes. “I’m always treated well. Manchester United have got incredible support. They get behind their managers and players.
“If anybody thought we were going to switch everything around [at Everton], then they’re off their head. When I came back in, I was thinking ‘Can I just keep them up?’
“It’s much better now. We hope to keep improving, keep progressing. I feel my job is to do that and to get us on safe ground, where we’re not always looking over our shoulder.”

Defender Harry Maguire and forward Benjamin Sesko are unavailable for United with injuries sustained against Spurs on November 8.
“He is going to stay out for a few weeks,” Amorim said of £65 million signing Sesko. “I don’t know how long, but it is not that serious.”
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could return to contention and centre-back Lisandro Martinez is closing in on a comeback from a long-term knee injury.
“We need to be careful as [Martinez] is going to struggle in the first [few] minutes,” acknowledged Amorim. “He is clearly in a better position, compared to two weeks ago.”
On-loan Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl is Everton’s new absentee. “Merlin had an operation a week last Monday on his hernia,” said Moyes. “It’s going to keep him out for a few weeks.”
Defenders Jarrad Branthwaite (hamstring) and Nathan Patterson (foot and groin) are out, while Moyes was pleased to see 37-year-old right-back Seamus Coleman start Ireland’s games at home to Portugal and away to Hungary during the international break, helping his country reach the 2026 World Cup play-offs in last-gasp fashion in Budapest.
“It was really good to see Seamus get the minutes and get the time,” Moyes said of Coleman, who has barely featured in this season’s Premier League.
“It’s great he’s getting the minutes. His training is terrific and his attitude is always impeccable. He’s certainly in my thoughts, that’s for sure.”
