Liverpool v Wolves: Line-ups, stats and preview

Liverpool v Wolves preview

Arne Slot has pointed to Liverpool’s pair of 2-1 wins over Wolves in 2024/25 in an attempt to prevent complacency from his players against doomed-looking opponents at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds are expected to comfortably beat visitors 16 points from safety and without a win in their opening 17 league games of the season.

“Regardless of their current position, we will expect the kind of test that we faced against them last season,” said Slot, calling those encounters “very difficult”.

“This is just the way the Premier League is, which makes it so, so important to be on the right side of the small margins. Lately, we have been able to do that more often than had been the case in previous weeks.”

While Liverpool are unbeaten in six matches in all competitions and have won their last three, Wolves suffered their 11th consecutive defeat with a 2-0 loss at home to Brentford last Saturday.

“We don’t have time or energy to feel sorry for ourselves,” defender Matt Doherty told Wolves’ website, calling on the squad to “produce some magic” alongside vastly improved defensive resolve.

Wolves boss Rob Edwards

“We have to just wake up for training every day, chest up, head high and work as hard as we possibly can. At the moment, there are 19 other teams ripping the Premier League away from us.

“We need to fight back, even if the end result is the same. There are ways to go about it, and I’d rather do it a certain way – not the way we’re doing at the moment.”

Liverpool v Wolves team news

Defender Joe Gomez is out for Liverpool but Slot gave Conor Bradley and Cody Gakpo half a chance of featuring.

Defender Giovanni Leoni has a long-term knee injury and forward Mohamed Salah is at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt.

Centre-back Yerson Mosquera is also banned for Wolves for yellow card accumulations but wideman Hugo Bueno could return from a groin injury.

Winger Rodrigo Gomes (groin) and midfielder Marshall Munetsi (calf) are also sidelined, while Leon Chiwome has a serious knee injury and centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou is at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 with Ivory Coast.

Liverpool

Wolves

With Liverpool huge favourites, a bet on a one-goal win may provide better value. Wolves were only beaten by an added-time winner at Arsenal in their last away game, while Aston Villa beat Wanderers 1-0 in their previous match on the road.
