Marseille v PSG match preview
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia started as he means to go on in this season’s Champions League with a goal and the Player of the Match award in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-0 win over Atalanta, but the winger is under no illusions about the level of focus required for their next encounter.
Marseille took the lead before losing 2-1 at Real Madrid in their European opener and were immediately behind PSG almost throughout last season as the Parisiens breezed to the title, with a measure of revenge likely to be one of OM’s motivations after finishing 19 points behind the champions.
“We are preparing ourselves well,” Kvaratskhelia said of a tantalising fixture between two of the titans of French football. “We know about this game, what it means to our fans.”
Manager Luis Enrique echoed the 24-year-old’s theme. “We know what it means for our supporters and the club,” the Spaniard emphasised. “We’re happy to be going to Marseille and we’ll try to win the game.”
PSG have won all of their first four Ligue 1 games but Marseille, who have alternated between wins and defeats in theirs, will hope a 4-0 home win over Lorient last time out prefaces more consistent form.
In his second season in charge, OM manager Roberto De Zerbi believes his side showed in Madrid that they have improved since suffering comprehensive defeats to PSG in 2024/25.
“We have a strong team with strong and experienced players,” explained the Italian. “It’s different from last season. It won’t be my first Classique.
“We realise the importance of this match – it’s special, the whole of France is watching. These are the two best teams in France.
“We’re preparing for it with a lot of enthusiasm. There’s a gap between us and them, but I’d like to fight with them until the end.”
Marseille v PSG team news
Nayef Aguerd scored on his Marseille debut against Lorient but did not travel to Madrid because of concussion protocols, with the Morocco defender’s availability being monitored day by day.
“His health comes first and then we’ll see,” said De Zerbi, adding that on-loan Bournemouth midfielder Hamed Traore will be out for “a few weeks”.
Striker Ousmane Dembele (hamstring) and winger Desire Doue (calf) are out for PSG with injuries suffered while playing for France.
Defender Lucas Beraldo (ankle) will be absent and midfielder Joao Neves is sidelined with a hamstring problem sustained against Atalanta.

Marseille v PSG prediction
The recent head-to-head stats in Ligue 1 between these teams make near-flawless reading for PSG, who are unbeaten in 12 league visits to Marseille across almost 14 years and have won each of the last five top-flight meetings between the teams by at least two goals, also keeping a clean sheet in seven of the last nine.
Those numbers might not spark much confidence in a punt on both teams to score, but De Zerbi’s attacking brand of football, Marseille’s average of more than two goals per league game last season and their status as the third-highest scorers in Ligue 1 across the first four games suggest it may be worthwhile on a 2-1 PSG win.
