Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma says his side’s closing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Ivory Coast is a matter of “honour, pride and dignity” after being eliminated with a 3-2 defeat to Mozambique on Sunday.

The Panthers reached the last 16 on their previous appearance in 2021 but that result, combined with their opening 1-0 loss to Cameroon, means they will go out regardless of the outcome of their meeting with the holders.

“This is about representing our people,” former Gabon defender Mouyouma told Canal Plus. “To begin rebuilding more easily, we rebuild on renewal.

“Victory contributes to renewal. We are in that state of mind. The players are motivated and want to finish strong.”

Manchester United midfielder Amad Diallo has netted both of Ivory Coast’s goals in Morocco, earning the Elephants a 1-0 win against Mozambique and opening the scoring in a 1-1 draw with Cameroon.

“First place is important but we have to think about the matches coming up afterwards,” said manager Emerse Fae.

Ivory Coast are level on four points and tiebreakers with the Indomitable Lions at the top of Group F, one ahead of Mozambique, who have also qualified.

Mozambique and Cameroon meet in the simultaneous final closing group match on Wednesday. The section winners will face Burkina Faso or Sudan in Marrakesh on Tuesday, while the runners-up will take on South Africa in Rabat two days earlier and the third-placed team will encounter Nigeria in Fez on Monday, with all three potential fixtures starting at 19:00 GMT (14:00 ET / 11:00 PT).

Gabon v Ivory Coast team news

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a mixed AFCON, coming on as an early substitute against Cameroon after arriving with a thigh injury and scoring in the defeat to Mozambique.

Gabon’s all-time top scorer has now returned to club side Marseille and will miss the game against Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast are likely to rotate, with the likes of Aston Villa forward Evann Guessand, Nottingham Forest defender Willy Boly and former Crystal Palace and Manchester United livewire Wilfried Zaha among the players who could come in.

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast have a patchy record in group-stage closers but there is a moderate incentive for them to win this one, with top spot in the group ensuring they would avoid two-time champions Algeria, three-time winners Nigeria and host nation and tournament favourites Morocco before a potential final.
