Tottenham v Slavia Prague preview

Manager Thomas Frank says he has a “good feeling” Tottenham can take a “massive step” towards the last 16 of the Champions League when his side attempt to make it three wins from three home games in this season’s competition.

The Czech First League leaders have drawn three and lost two of their league phase matches, leaving the visitors three points shy of the play-off places to reach the next stage.

“It’s a very important one,” said Frank, whose players ended a five-match winless run in all competitions by beating his former club, Brentford, 2-0 at home in the Premier League on Saturday.

“So far, we have a perfect [home] record [in the Champions League]. Can we continue that? In the first bit, [the aim] is to qualify for the play-off rounds [by finishing between 9th and 24th].

“If and when hopefully we qualify for that, then we can look further ahead. We know it can be very awkward and difficult against Slavia, but I have a good belief that we can come out and perform well again.”

Slavia are unbeaten in five matches in all competitions since their 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal on November 4, including a 0-0 draw at home to Athletic Club on Champions League Matchday 5 on November 25.

Eight years after joining the club, manager Jindrich Trpisovsky has somewhat played down talk that he could fill the vacant Czechia manager job for their World Cup qualifying play-off at home to the Republic of Ireland in March.

“I do not have that ambition,” said the 49-year-old, via iSport. “I like club football and I feel a bond with Slavia and a responsibility to the owner.

“Some things can happen, but I have not talked to anyone about it yet.”

Tottenham v Slavia Prague team news

Tottenham and Italy wideman Destiny Udogie is out until January with a hamstring injury, while Frank described forward Brennan Johnson’s condition as “touch and go”.

“There will be a bit of rotation to make sure everyone is full of energy and freshness,” added Frank, who is without striker Dominic Solanke because of an ankle problem.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club footballer Micky van de Ven

Defender Micky Van de Ven and forwards Richarlison and Kolo Muani will be suspended for the home game against Borussia Dortmund on January 20 if they are booked.

Slavia are without Liberia midfielder Oscar Dorley. Forward Tomas Chory is a doubt through illness, while Youssoupha Mbodji will sit out the visit of Barcelona on January 21 if the left-back is cautioned.

Tottenham v Slavia prediction

Tottenham

2 0

Slavia

Spurs should see off a Slavia side yet to score away in this season’s competition, although the visitors’ 0-0 draw at Atalanta on October 22 – including 16 attempts at goal – reflects their potential to cause problems.
