Match Preview for Newcastle v PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven coach Peter Bosz will set his side up to win at St James’ Park tomorrow night but knows a point would be a good result to take back to the Netherlands.

PSV are going great guns domestically with the weekend win at Fortuna Sittard their 13th on the trot in the Eredivisie, a run that has enabled them to open up a 16-point lead at the summit and, barring a dramatic collapse, they will be crowned Dutch champions for the third year in succession and 27th time overall.

They haven’t found the going quite as easy in the Champions League, however, although there have been some incredible highlights.

Defeats to Union SG and Atletico Madrid and a draw with Olympiacos were disappointing but the 6-2 thrashing of Italian champions Napoli and 4-1 victory at English champions Liverpool will live long in the memory.

They start the week in 21st place in the league phase, two points above the elimination spots and can’t afford to lose on Tyneside given they face Bayern Munich in their final fixture next week.

“We go there with a good feeling, but we also know what has to happen,” Bosz said after the game at the weekend. “We have to get at least one point. But we always go into games to win, so that also applies to this match.”

PSV will come up against a Newcastle team struggling for top form but still recording decent results.

Sunday’s goalless draw at Wolves was a tough watch but saw them climb back up to eighth in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s tactics are not winning him many admirers among the Newcastle fans that like to give their opinion on social media but they have lost just one of their last six games and are still alive in three cup competitions, albeit they will do well to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit to Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-finals.

Team News for Newcastle v PSV Eindhoven

Newcastle remain short of numbers at the back with Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth all sidelined.

PSV also have several absentees with Ismael Saibari making his way back from his controversial appearance in the AFCON final while Ricardo Pepi, Alessane Plea, Nick Olij and Myron Boadu are all injured.
