Inter v Arsenal – Line-ups, stats and preview

Match Preview for Inter v Arsenal

One point away from the last 16 of the Champions League, Arsenal put their perfect record on the line at San Siro on Tuesday night when they lock horns with Inter Milan.

Six points and five places separate the two European heavyweights in the league-phase table, with the Nerazzurri eager to avoid an unwanted early exit scenario.

Inter Milan were close to flawless in the opening rounds of the competition, winning each of their first four Champions League matches while conceding just one goal, but Cristian Chivu’s side have since seen their aura of invincibility fade.

Back-to-back defeats against Atletico Madrid and Liverpool have stalled their momentum, with the latter ending Inter’s 18-game unbeaten home run in the Champions League courtesy of a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty at San Siro.

Arsenal arrive in Milan boasting the best defensive record in the Champions League this season, conceding just once across six matches, a goal that came in their statement win over Bayern Munich.

Mikel Arteta’s side followed that up with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Club Brugge, leaving the Gunners on the brink of securing a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the last 16.

While Arsenal’s European form has been flawless, their Premier League performances have dipped slightly, with back-to-back goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest halting their momentum.

The latter result also ended a 14-game scoring streak away from home in all competitions, while Inter will draw confidence from last season’s 1-0 Champions League win over Arsenal at San Siro.

Team news for Inter Milan v Arsenal

Inter Milan will be without Hakan Calhanoglu due to a calf injury and Denzel Dumfries, who is sidelined with an ankle problem.

Goalkeeper Josep Martinez could return to the matchday squad, but Raffaele Di Gennaro and Tomas Palacios remain unavailable.

Alessandro Bastoni and Marcus Thuram were rested at the weekend and are expected to return to the starting XI, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan should feature against his former club in midfield.

Arsenal have several players walking a suspension tightrope, with Mikel Merino, Christian Norgaard and Declan Rice all one booking away from missing the next round.

Max Dowman, Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori remain sidelined through injury, while Arteta may rotate slightly with domestic commitments looming.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, Merino and Gabriel Jesus are among those pushing for starts in Milan.

Prediction

Inter Milan

1 0

Arsenal

With Arsenal already on the brink of qualification and domestic priorities looming, this could be a night where their focus wavers slightly.

Inter, by contrast, have more riding on the result and remain formidable at home, making them capable of edging a tight, low-scoring contest and bringing Arsenal’s European winning run to an end.
