United States vs Canada match preview

This is the denouement to a weekend quartet of CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals and, on paper, the schedule has certainly saved the best for last.

Exactly three weeks ago, these two neighbours met in Las Vegas in the Nations League Final, with the U.S. retaining the trophy, courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Allegiant Stadium.

Both have much-changed rosters, but will this clash in Cincinnati go the same way?

The United States certainly come into this one as heavy favourites, after coming through the group stages unbeaten.

Their toughest test, by a substantial margin, came in their group opener, needing an 88th minute equaliser from Brandon Vázquez to salvage a draw against Jamaica at Solider Field.

After that, B. J. Callaghan’s team enjoyed back-to-back 6-0 victories, first smashing Saint Kitts & Nevis in St. Louis, before and equally emphatic victory over Trinidad & Tobago in Charlotte last Sunday.

So, having retained their Nations League title last month, USA are three wins away from hoisting aloft back-to-back Gold Cups for the first time since 2007, reaffirming their position as the best team in this region.

The United States haven’t failed to reach the semi-finals of this competition since 2000, which is actually the year Canada won their one and only title, very much confident of preserving that record in Ohio.

As for Canada, they had to work exponentially harder to get through their group.

The Canucks were held to a 2-2 draw by Guadeloupe in their opener in Toronto, with Jacen Russell-Rowe scoring an unfortunate 93rd minute own goal.

Four days later, les Rouges could only manage a goalless draw with Guatemala, meaning they were under massive pressure ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Cuba in Houston.

In the end, they cruised to a 4-2 victory, with Junior Hoilett converting an early penalty, before Jonathan Osorio, Jayden Nelson and Liam Millar were all on target.

Ultimately, John Herdman’s team got through in second place, avoiding an ignominious early exit.

Now, can Canada cause a big Sunday night upset by knocking out the holders?

Well, les Rouges have enjoyed recent victories over their neighbours to the south, beating the U.S. in Toronto in the Nations League in 2019, before a World Cup qualifying victory in Hamilton last year, both ending 2-0.

However, the Canucks have not beaten USA in America since a 3-2 victory in St. Louis 66 years ago.

For context as to how long ago that is, Brian Philley, who scored the opening goal, was five year old when the Empire State Building opened.

So, the U.S. are strong favourites to prevail at TQL Stadium, setting up a semi-final meeting with Panama in San Diego on Wednesday.

United States team news

Both sides are missing their Europe-based stars: that’s no Sergiño Dest, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Gio Reyna, Tim Weah, Christian Pulisic or Folarin Balogun.

Meanwhile, Alan Soñora will miss the rest of the tournament due to injury, while Aidan Morris sat out the Trinidad & Tobago game due to personal issues, with Jackson Yueill having be drafted in.

Goalkeeper and captain Matt Turner became the fastest goalkeeper in USMNT history to reach 20 clean sheets, reaching this milestone in just 30 caps.

At the other end of the field, Jesús Ferreira has become just the second American man to score 3+ hat-tricks for the national team, after Landon Donovan, and the first to achieve this in back-to-back games.

Miles Robinson returned at centre-back on Sunday, his first appearance since the Nations League semi-final, managing 45 minutes as he’s been saved for the knockout rounds.

Đorđe Mihailović’s brace against St Kitts will see him keep his place, while DeAndre Yedlin could come in for Bryan Reynolds at right-back.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Turner; Reynolds, Robinson, Neal, Tolkin; Sands, Busio, Mihailović; Zendejas, Ferreira, Cowell.

Canada team news

Canada similarly didn’t name any of their stars in their squad, namely Alistair Johnston, Ismaël Koné, Tajon Buchanan, Cyle Larin, Alphonso Davies or Jonathan David.

Atiba Hutchinson retired after the Nations League Final, Stephen Eustáquio and Sam Adekugbe pulled out on the eve of the tournament, while Milan Borjan suffered an injury during the Guatemala game.

Borjan’s injury saw Dayne St. Clair start in goal against Cuba, winning just his third cap.

If everyone was available, centre-backs Steven Vitória and Kamal Miller are the only players who would start that’ll feature here.

But, this presents opportunities for others, with Victor Loturi making his debut off the bench on Tuesday.

Junior Hoilett and Lucas Cavallini are the experienced faces in this team, continuing to lead the attack.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): St. Clair; Kennedy, Vitória, Miller; Lareya, Ahmed, Fraser, Osorio, Millar; Hoilett, Cavallini.
