Spain vs England match preview

Both have reached the World Cup Final for the very first time, so who will join USA, Norway, Germany and Japan in being crowned champions of the world?

England are not the most popular team in Australia right now, having crushed the co-hosts hopes in Wednesday’s thrilling semi-final.

Ella Toone fired the Lionesses in front in that one, she literally couldn’t have hit it any sweeter, before the Matildas equalised on the hour mark, with Sam Kerr thwacking one in from distance.

But, Australia were only level for eight minutes, because Lauren Hemp’s persistence paying off, pouncing on some slack defending and poking her team in front.

Then, late on, England rubber stamped their place in the final, with Hemp’s inch-perfect through-ball picking out Alessia Russo who cooly slotted into the far corner.

England had previously fallen at the semi-final stage in both 2015 and 2019, but it was third time lucky, as Sarina Wiegman continues to change this team’s fortunes.

Wiegman led the Lionesses to Euros glory last summer and, having tasted defeat in the World Cup Final in charge of Netherlands four years ago, the boss is seeking to right that wrong on a personal level too.

So, will the European Champions add a first-ever World Cup to their rapidly growing list of honours?

24 hours earlier, Spain had battled past Sweden in their last four clash, prevailing in a game that only really came to life in the final ten minutes.

Salma Paralluelo, who’s been one of the stars of this tournament, fired la Roja in front with, what she though, was the winning goal, only for Sweden to equalise in the 88th minute.

Nevertheless, a mere 93 seconds later, a corner was played short to Olga Carmona who, from a long way out, lashed the ball off the crossbar and in; a spectacular goal to book their place in this final.

Spain had never won a World Cup knockout game before, but have overcome Switzerland, Netherlands and Sweden down under, despite the ongoing off-field issues, with a dozen players still striking against the RFEF.

Head Coach Jorge Vilda may feel vindicated by this run, although he remains a divisive and broadly unpopular figure amongst his players, both the ones in Australia and those not.

So, on the flip side, this Spanish side has done extremely well to get this far in=spite of their manager, with, potentially, an entire starting XIs worth of players sat at home.

England and Spain have recent expirence of facing each-other in a huge major tournament match, clashing at the quarter-final stage of last summer’s Euros in Brighton.

Esther González broke the deadlock that night, only for Ella Toone’s late equaliser to keep England alive, before the Lionesses marched on, courtesy of Georgia Stanway’s wonder strike in extra time.

So, this final could hardly be any more finely-poised, so will it be Spain or European champions England who win the World Cup at Sydney Olympic Stadium?

Spain team news

Right-back Oihane Hernández sat out Tuesday’s semi-final victory suspended, but is set to return at right-back here, with Ona Batlle returning to the left and match-winner Olga Carmona left out.

In goal, Cata Coll only made her senior international debut in the round of 16, but will now start in a World Cup Final, with Misa Rodríguez having been dropped and Sandra Paños part of ‘las 15′ who aren’t here.

Salma Paralluelo has come on to score crucial goals against in the quarter and semi-finals, but has made herself a useful ‘super sub’, so once again could be used from the bench.

Back-to-back Ballon d’Or Féminin winner Alexia Putellas is still being eased back after suffering an ACL injury 13 months ago, so could begin on the bench as well, with Aitana Bonmatí this team’s superstar midfielder.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Coll; Hernández, Paredes, Codina, Batlle; Bonmatí, Abelleira, Hermoso; Caldentey, Redondo, González.

England teams news

All the talk regarding England’s team news surrounds Lauren James, who was electric in the group stages, scoring against Denmark and twice in the hammering of China PR, before being sent off against Nigeria.

The 21 year old sat out the quarter and semi-finals due to her subsequent suspension, but is available again, so does she get put straight back into the XI?

This would seem harsh on Ella Toone, who put in her best performance of the tournament on Wednesday, scoring the opener, and consistency is usually key for Sarina Wiegman.

The Lionesses will continue to operate out of a back three, that Wiegman switched to ahead of the China victory, with Lauren Hemp partnering Alessia Russo in attack.

Lucy Bronze has won all there is to win during her illustrious career, seven league titles, four Champions Leagues and the Euros, and said following the win over Australia that the World Cup is the only one left.

Kiera Walsh and Bronze both play alongside the majority of this Spain team at Barcelona Femení, hoping that insider knowledge can be a marginal gain.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Earps; Carter, Bright, Greenwood; Bronze, Stanway, Walsh, Daly; Toone, Hemp, Russo.
